It was my first show in quite a while. Like virtually every other industry, the world of weddings was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, and hit hard. With the resulting lockdowns and wedding postponements, my lack of DJing became another entry on a long list of things I missed. Suffice it to say, I was pleased as wedding punch to dust off my lonely tuxedo.
Adventure Time
No two weddings are the same – which has always been one of my favorite things about being a wedding DJ in Minneapolis. I’ve always considered each wedding its own little mini-adventure. And even after more than a decade of DJing in the Twin Cities, I always feel a sense of anticipation and excitement upon reception day. Coming out of a long DJ drought, this was true more than ever.
Nice to See You
Cocktail hour was lively, promising good things for the eventual dance festivities. In the air was the clear sense that the guests were delighted to be out and together – even more so than normal. Weddings are one of the few times in life when everybody comes together. Social circles that don’t usually interact socialize, sometimes for the very first time. Family members catch up after not seeing each other for years. It’s always a joy to watch it play out as the guests slowly grow in number.
Two DJs. Plus, one in the Crowd
I had a co-DJ with me that evening, which is always good for sharing some tricks of the trade. Sharing the DJ console with another pro DJ usually makes both DJs better, as we always learn from each other. At one point during the dance, a fella introduced himself to me, while dancing. He said that he was once an Instant Request DJ, and that we were, “killin’ it.” When a fellow DJ compliments your work, it means a lot. Trust me, they don’t come easy. We’re always judging the person behind the DJ booth – we just can’t help it! I took the compliment, and his song request – a Pitbull song, which I knew was one of the bride’s favorite artists. Win-win.
Saturday Night, Sundae Night
Even though certain restrictions were still in place (masks, limited guest list, early finish time, etc.) the energy in the venue was something special. As for the dance floor, it was rocking all night long – with the exception of a short period of time in which I was asked to announce that the sundae bar was ready – proving once again that there’s no competing with ice cream.
The vibe of the night, at least for me, was that it’s good to be back. I for one, can’t wait for my next little mini-adventure.
